Down Beat Jazz Magazine
What "Variety" is to movies and the theater "Down
Beat" was to Jazz. The periodical was published in Chicago
and was filled with all the industry news as well as a comprehensive
list of where the bands were playing, classified ads, and a feisty
letters to the editor column called "Gutbucket Drippin's."
The 24 page newspaper began publishing in 1934. It came out on
the first and fifteenth of every month. We have a small selection
of issues from 1942 to 1944. In spite of the fact that World War
II was in full force there were a surprising number of musical
performances to entertain those supporting the war effort at home.
Also included were the names of musicians called up for active
service. All of the issues are in fairly decent condition. $25.00
each
