Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum Photographs 1903
Isabella Stewart (1840-1924), a New York socialite, moved
to Boston when she married John Gardner in 1860, where she sought
to establish her home as an intellectual and social center. With
the assistance of Bernard Berenson, noted American art critic,
she assembled an outstanding collection of contemporary and classical
paintings and sculpture. In order to house her ever expanding
collection she had a house built on the Fenway in the style of
a Venetian palazzo. The house, called Fenway Court, was opened
in 1903 and then bequeathed to the city of Boston as The Isabella
Stewart Gardner Museum.
We have acquired a set of 38 photographs depicting the exterior
architectural features of the museum as well as the courtyard,
several rooms and a selection of the paintings and objects. The
photographer, Thomas E. Marr of Tremont Street in Boston, was
a well known society photographer of the time. Each photograph
is approximately 9.5" x 7.5" and is mounted on gray
cardboard. The title of the photo is hand written and each has
a pasted-on description of the image. Each photograph bears the
name of the photographer, the copyright date of 1903 and some
have the photographer's name embossed on the back. We have listed
