Dan Patch Advertising Print for International Stock Food Co.
Dan Patch was known as the "World's Champion Horse"
and the greatest harness horse in the history of two wheelers.
He set the world record of 1:55 for the mile for pacers in 1906;
a record that was unsurpassed for almost half a century. He began
his career as a four year old in 1900. His third owner, Mr. Marion
Savage, recognized the remarkable qualities of this horse and
set about training him to bring him to his full potential. After
Dan Patch began breaking records he became one of the first animal
celebrities. He traveled thousands of miles and earned fabulous
sums from his races and exhibitions. Mr. Savage, founder and owner
of the International Stock Food Co., was a remarkable showman
and marketer. He used the well known horse to advertise his business
with phenomenal success. He developed an array of Dan Patch products
and promoted them heavily while on tour. The bond between horse
and owner was so great that they died within 24 hours of one another.
