Brownie Soda Bottles
Palmer Cox created the Brownies, imaginary sprites engaged
in playful deeds and harmless pranks, in the later part of the
Victorian era. The endearing characters continued into the 20th
century. They work and play while others sleep and were thought
to represent the best and worst of society. It is believed that
they were the inspiration for Little Nemo, Kewpies, Raggedy Ann
and other characters set in a fantasy world. The Brownies appeared
in books, on trade cards and soda bottles. They live on as the
namesake for the Kodak Brownie Camera, the first boxed camera.
It is a product that enjoyed immense popularity for at least
50 years.
