The Week End Magazine - An Illustrated Journal for the Home
and Fireside
The Week End Magazine An Illustrated Journal for the Home
and Fireside was a weekly magazine for woman that included
serialized novels, patterns for women's and children's clothing,
household hints and recipes. The novels were written by some
of the best known romance writers of the day such as Charles Garvice.
Some issues included a piece of music or needlework instructions.
One issue even had the floor plan for a "Compact Frame Residence"
estimated to cost $3,500. There are no dates in the magazine,
but judging from the style of the clothing patterns offered for
sale and knowing the literary contributors we estimate that The
Week End Magazine was published from the 1880's to the early part
of the twentieth century. The issues we have acquired have two
different covers. The covers are somewhat soiled and yellowed
but they are intact and very readable. They provide an fascinating
view of the interests and entertainments of women 100 years ago.
