Picasso - Aragon Shakespeare NY: Harry N. Abrams 1964,
124 pages, 13 gravure illustrations. Large format 13" x 18.5"
book. In 1964 on the occasion of the four-hundredth anniversary
of Shakespeare's birth friends persuaded Picasso to make a drawing
of the playwright. Pablo Picasso, true to his nature, created
numerous variations on the theme, including several that made
witty references to Hamlet. Louis Aragon was asked to contribute
an essay to accompany the drawings. The result was an essay entitled
"Shakespeare, Hamlet, and Us." However, his major contribution
to the book is a composition in the Surrealist vein called "Murmur."
A limited number of copies of this book were published. This is
copy 638 of an edition of one thousand. It is a wonderful fusion
of art and literature. Condition: Book Excellent, Dust Jacket
is very lightly soiled, and has a small amount of old price label
