People's Literary Companion Newspapers
The People's Literary Companion was published weekly in Augusta,
Maine. An annual subscription was $2.00; an individual copy sold
for six cents. Each newspaper was eight pages and included several
serialized novels, short literary pieces, a Farm and Household
column, a Wit and Humor column and other articles thought to be
of interest to their readers. The fiction was very often written
by noted popular authors of the time including Colonel Prentiss
Ingraham, author of the Buffalo Bill stories. We have two library
paper bound portfolios from 1876 each containing eight issues.
Greater detail is provided below. Since this was the year of the
Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia there were articles concerning
the Revolutionary War and America's fight for Independence. There
were also features about the Centennial itself, including marvelous
etchings of the buildings, exhibition halls, and fairgrounds.
The reader was offered the promotion of a large keepsake picture
of the exhibition in exchange for renewing his subscription and
getting another person to take out a subscription. These newspapers
have been professionally bound and where needed professionally
