Rails of the World - A Monograph of the Family Rallidae by S. Dillon Ripley and illustrated by J. Fenwick Lansdowne is a magnificent example of the printers art. Much like an Audubon portfolio this volume presents exquisite detailed paintings of these oft overlooked marsh birds. The book was published by David R. Godine in Toronto in 1977 in an edition of 400. This is copy 231. It is bound in half red Morocco and ships in a wooden box which gives book title and copy number. Each copy is signed by Ripley and includes an original signed and numbered print by Lansdowne. This comprehensive and informative large format (10.5" x 14.25") book contains 406 pages with forty-one paintings of birds by Lansdowne.
