1939 Golden Gate International Exposition Calendar/Thermometer
with Country Music Stars Picture
Very rare 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition souvenir
combining a calendar for 1939, a thermometer and a picture of
famous country music stars of the day. The piece features the
skyline of the San Francisco World's Fair- 1939, the South Gardens,
and The Tower of the Sun. There are also pictures of Emigrant
Peak in Yellowstone Park and Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone.
The most interesting section of the piece is the picture, which
appears to have been applied to the calendar, in the lower center
that reads " Seasons Greetings from the Cumberland Ridge
Runners. Reading left to right:: Randy Blake, Harty Taylor, "Uncle
Ervin" Viktor, Violet Black, Doc Hopkins, Shelby Jean Davis,
Mert Minnick, Ruth Flannery, Karl Davis, Buster Closson."
Karl and Harty originally sang as the Renfro Valley Boys. After
gaining experience and earning a spot on WLS radio station they
renamed the group the Cumberland Ridge Runners and took on additional
musicians. The group, formed in 1930, had its roots in Kentucky,
Karl and Harty's home. Over the years many musicians played with
the group. Many of them went on to successful solo careers. The
piece measures 12" w. x 13" high. With frame it measures
approximately 14" x 15" It can be shipped without the
frame. There is some rubbing and light creases but it remains
a very unusual and desirable piece. (Stock number 003wf39SF-0714A)
