General (Chester A.) Arthur Cigar Tip or Change Tray
In the highly competitive cigar business of the late 19th
and early twentieth centuries point of purchase advertising was
of paramount importance. Cigar manufacturers vied for counter
space at retail outlets to stimulate impulse purchases. Popular
figures endorsed various brands of cigar and allowed the use of
their names and likenesses as cigar brands. Chester A. Arthur
(1829-1886) rose to Brigadier General of the Quartermaster Corps
during the civil war and was selected to be Garfield's Vice Presidential
running mate in 1880. In 1881 he became the 21st President of
the United States after the assassination of Garfield. This very
attractive change tray was provided by Kerbs, Wertheim & Schiffer
of New York, It probably dates to the period in the 1870s when
Arthur was Collector of the Port of New York,. Approximately 4
1/2" wide by 3 1/8"" tall. Some surface loss.
