Commencement Programs

We discovered these two Civil War era programs from Massachusetts
Medical College of Harvard University Medical Commencements tucked
in a 19th century theatre program. The 1863 pre-Civil War commencement
was held on Wednesday, March 11th. A prayer was offered by the
president, Thomas Hill, D. D. Six dissertations written by members
of the graduating class were selected for public reading. Degrees
were conferred on the 57 graduates most of whom were from New
England. There was also a sizable contingent from the Canadian
Maritimes. The Address was given by Prof. Henry I. Bowditch.

The 1866 commencement was held on Wednesday, March 7th in
the midst of the Civil War. The opening prayer was offered
by the president, now listed as Rev. President Hill, D. D., LL.D.
Again, six dissertations written by members of the graduating
class were selected for public reading. Degrees were conferred
on the graduates. The Address was given by Prof. D. Humphreys
Storer, M. D. 5.25" x 8.25" Some stains and soiling
