D.C. & Co. Jumbo Tobacco Plug with Paper Label. Before
the market for tobacco products became dominated by machine rolled
cigarettes Tobacco for smoking was sold in segments cut from a
large brick or plug of tobacco. Plugs were sold by weight and
cut in the retail establishment. Needless to say, some retailers
substituted inferior grades of tobacco for the popular premium
brands of the day. In an attempt to protect their brands and customers
tobacco manufacturers began to offer pre-cut plugs with a tobacco
tag or label to prevent this substitution.
