Our Gang Souvenir Portrait Plates
Over 200 "Our Gang" comedies were released by Hal
Roach Studios and MGM as one- or two-reelers between 1922 and
1944. The hugely successful films featured little rascals Alfalfa,
Farina, Buckwheat, Spanky, Darla Hood, Baby Jean, Micky, Waldo,
and their dogs Pete the Pup, Pal and Von. The films were later
syndicated on television as "The Little Rascals" (1955-65),
as "Our Gang Comedies" (1956-65) and as "Mischief
Makers" (1960-70). The "Our Gang" comic books were
published in the 1940's. The children and their pets got into
mild mischief, played hookey, put on shows and had lots of harmless
fun. They are well known to many generations of children.
The Sebring Pottery Company under license of Hal Roach and
Our Gang issued a series of portrait plates featuring the well
known characters. These scarce souvenirs were probably used as
movie theater premiums in the 1920's.
