Shrine Circus Programs
The Shriners, a fraternal group founded in 1872, is best known
for its support for hospitals for crippled children and burn victims.
More than 130 Shrine Temples produce circuses every year throughout
the United States and Canada. These events are a major component
of the Shriners' fundraising efforts. The pre-circus street parade
is kept alive by several Shrine Temples. They provide a drum and
bugle corps, Oriental bands, the Arab Patrol, color guards, clowns,
Mounted Patrols, brass bands and more. The circus program book
sold at the event serves multiple purposes. It is a traditional
program listing the acts and including pictures of the performers,
a means to inform attendees of the good works performed by the
Shriners and an advertising medium for local businesses. The Shrine
Circus continues to be a very popular event in part because it
is performed in smaller venues outside of major metropolitan areas.
