Artist's Museum and Gallery Posters
Some credit Henri Toulouse-Lautrec and Pierre Bonnard with
the genesis of not only the modern poster but of the artist's
poster as well. The later is a work of art designed specifically
as a poster rather than an adaptation of a piece done in another
medium. While many of these posters were created to promote a
gallery or museum exhibition others were produced to mark a special
event (The Olympic Games, Lincoln Center Performances, The Montreux
Jazz Festival, The New York Film Festival). Galerie Maeght and
Foundation Maeght were the premier publishers of posters by French
based European artists. The early posters were printed by Morlot
and later ones by Adrian Maeght. Picasso, Miro and Chagall were
the three most sought after and prolific poster artists. The series
of Vallauris posters by Picasso were done in linocut and woodblock
as well as lithography and are highly desirable. Click to see Picasso Vallauris linocut
Stone or plate lithography remained the most common printing process.
Because this area of collecting has been neglected there is still
a great opportunity to acquire an original work of art at an affordable
price. Click on the picture to see an enlarged image.
