J. Klinger Theater Poster - "Der Feldherrnhugel"
Julius Klinger, (1876-1942) a popular Austrian poster designer
and illustrator, was noted for his strong caricature like images,
bold graphic design and sense of humor. His work was in the Jugendstil
style, the German variant of Art Nouveau. He published illustrations
for satirical magazines and later when he moved to Germany he
produced posters primarily for commercial clients and cultural
institutions. He returned to Vienna, Austria and then worked in
the United States. Because Klinger and his wife were Jewish they
were sent to a concentration camp where they perished.
This theater poster was produced for the highly successful
military farce "The Officers Knoll", "Der Feldherrnhugel."
The play was presented in the "Lustspielhaus" loosely
translated as comedy club or theater. The line of officers on
the poster looking suspiciously like wooden soldiers is in keeping
with the satirical theme of the play. The unbending Prussian militarism
was contrasted with the easy going nature of the Austrian people.
The flat black, red, gold and grey color and the stylized figures
made this one of Klinger's most successful posters. It measures
approximately 37" x 28". Printed by Hollerbaum &
Schmidt, Berlin (identified at bottom right). Linen-backed. There
is slight soiling along the edge where the poster meets the linen
backing, there are also some minor brown spots, and edge creasing.
